Engine Light Staying On?

I drive a 2001 Acura 1.7 and the other day I lost my fuel cap for the gas tank. 2 days later the engine light came on and I looked in my auto book which stated that a gas cap not securely on will cause this to stay on.

I purchased a generic cap from a auto parts store and in the manual for my car it states one driving trip will enable the engine light to turn off. I've driven like 4 times and the engine light still remains on, can someone tell me why the light won't go off? I'm hoping it's still the gas cap that's the problem.

you have a couple of options here. One, go to an "auto zone" or "shucks" auto parts store. they have a tool that they will plug into your car to read the trouble codes and see if there is another problem than needs fixing. It's possible there is something else wrong, or maybe the cap you bought isn't air tight. Anyway, that will give you the answers. Or, you can carefully disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery. do not let the wrench touch anything metal while you are doing this as it can cause serious harm to you and the cars electrical system. Wait a few minutes and then re attach it, also being careful. This should re sett the trouble codes and turn off the light. BUT, you will have to reset your clock, radio stations etc. If the light stays off, you are good to go. If the light comes back on, you definitely have a problem that needs to be checked and repaired.
Good luck

Wait some more "drive cycles" before you get the code readout and reset at http://www.autozone.com stores. If the new gas cap part number is right for the car, the light should reset itself in another week or so. Don't worry in the mean time.

The gas cap on your car must seal properly of you will have a check engine light due to evaporative emissions leaking into the atmosphere, you really should get the correct cap for the car and then drive it for about a week and see if it goes away, or run by an auto parts store and have them clear if for you for free. The evap system is not something that can be backyard diagnosed but if you left the cap off chances are good the correct gas cap should fix you up.

After your service engine light comes on it will take an average of 10 drive cycles for the vehicles computer to verify that the problem has been fixed and to clear the code. This is normal. If the code is still there in a week or so, take it to a Checkers or Auto Zone and have them clear the code manually with a scan tool. If after they've done this and the code reoccurs, go to the Acura dealership and get an OEM gas cap for that vehicle. Hope this helps. Good luck.

ALL THE ANSWERS I HAVE READ HAVE BEEN GOOD ONES. HOWEVER GO TO YOUR DEALLERSHIP TO GET THE RIGHT GAS CAP FOR YOUR CAR. THEN TAKE THE POSITIVE SIDE BATTERY CABLE OFF FOR ABOUT 10 AND REHOOK IT UP. THIS IS SUPPOSE TO REST THE COMPUTER IN THE CAR. IF THIS DOES NOT WORK TAKE IT TO THE SHOP AND LET THEM HOOK TO THE COMPUTER TO FIND THE PROBLEM. THIS WILL COST AROUND $50 IN MOST PLACES. IT IS WORTH THAT TO FIND THE PROBLEM THEN YOU WILL KNOW WHAT TO DO TO FIX IT.
